Apuan Alps Geopark

For its prominence,
isolation and shapeliness
the Pania claims ever
the first place in our minds
when we remember
the Apuan Alps.

Douglas William Freshfiled

“Pania”, “Petrapana” and
“Petra Apuana Mons” are the
ancient names of the Apuan Alps.
These terms derive from the
lexical root  ‘Pen’ (penna = peak)
of pre-roman origin
as the toponym Apennine.

We are the Apuans.
We are old, very, very old...
We cannot even remember
the amorous trembling
of the Earth which gave birth to us.
This is hidden in the depths
of our memory, where everything
is a confusion of fire and lava;
otherwise in endless oceans
where corals accumulated...
We found ourselves lined
up like brave stone horses,
along a sea which later became
known as Tyrrhenian...
